CENOTES – TULUM – DZ’ONOT.
THE LARGEST UNDERGROUND RIVER IN THE WORLD – SAC ACTUN CAVE SYSTEM – QUINTANA ROO MEXICO.
The largest underground river in the world stretches 347 kilometers in length and is located in Tulum. It winds for hundreds of kilometers through mystical caves, with the historic discovery occurring when the connection between two cave systems, known as Sac Actun (263 kilometers in length) and Dos Ojos (84 kilometers), was found.
Cenotes are renowned for their crystal-clear water and natural surroundings, often featuring impressive rock formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. The word “cenote” DZ’ONOT comes from the Mayan language; the ancient Mayans regarded these freshwater bodies as portals to the underworld or sacred and used them for ceremonial purposes and as sources of water supply.
Today, cenotes are a major tourist attraction due to their natural beauty, different water tones, historical significance, and geological uniqueness. Millions of visitors from around the world share photos and videos of their experiences on social media. If you’re visiting (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum), let yourself be touched by the ancestral frequencies of the world’s largest underground river ecosystem.
There are different types of cenotes and characteristics:
- OPEN CENOTES: These are the most common and often have a circular or elliptical shape. They are bodies of water that are completely open-air, some measuring 1 to 2 meters, while others can have considerable depths.
- SEMI-OPEN CENOTES: These have a partial opening on the surface where sunlight enters, illuminating the water. This means that part of the cenote is open, and part is covered or shaded by rocks or vegetation.
- CLOSED CENOTES: These cenotes are completely covered by the roof of a cave, and access is only possible through underground caves. In some, exploration is solely through cave diving.
Marine life you may encounter in cenotes includes:
Fish: cichlids, blind tetras – Invertebrates: snails or crabs – Small turtles.
